Barbara mitchell - Fiber Artist

Working with fabric and fibers in an artistic way allows me to express some of my deep beliefs regarding the grace of God and the beauty of the created world.  I make art quilts suitable for hanging on a wall.

I like the tactile qualities of fibers.  Most of my work is hand-stitched, as I find it to be a form of meditation.  I layer and manipulate fabrics by applique or piecing, then embellish with embroidery and sometimes beadwork.

I am influenced by world travel, nature, music, archetypes, and mythology.  While I do some landscape or realistic pieces, I also enjoy doing abstract work that evokes a sense of place or history.  These are mostly driven by color and movement.

My works are in private and liturgical collections and I exhibit my work at juried art shows throughout Alabama.  I am a juried member of Alabama Designer Craftsmen, and a member of the Greater Birmingham Fiber Guild, Evening Star Quilt Guild, and Birmingham Quilt Guild.  Click here to see more on the web.
